With Love Studio is featuring Chunlin Designs during June and I’m really happy to be here to show off her work and tell you a little bit about the sweet person behind it.
I’m a BIG fan of Chunlin Designs’ work and if you’re not familiar with her products yet you’ll understand why I love them so much once I show you my favorite ones.
Let’s start with “Little Hou Monkey”, #1 on my fave list!
Little Hou Monkey is part of her Chinese New Year collection, which also includes Little Young Goat, Little Shé Snake, Little Ma Horse and Little Long Dragon.
Aren’t these just stunning?
Now… the other 4 on my 5 fave list:
I sent the designer a few interview questions a couple of weeks ago and now I’ll share with you what I got from her:
What’s your real name if different from your designer name?
My real name is Chantal… Chantal Scalais, with a French accent.
What’s the meaning of your designer’s name and how did you come up with it?
I chose my little girl’s Chinese name as my designer name. Chunlin means “the beginning of something new”. It’s pronounced tcheun lin. It also means “born in the spring” and “a wish for something nice” so for me… it was just perfect.
How long have you been designing and did it all start?
I made my first baby steps as a designer in June 2008 when I released my first freebie, a little compilation of word art I made for a challenge. I needed a background for my preview and created my very first paper…I was hooked… totally loved the new world opening to me.
Tell us a little bit about you, your family and your daily life.
Well, what can I say. I live in Belgium with my husband Marc, our 2 wonderful girls: Anouk Qiao (16) and Lian Chunlin (14) and our family dog named Fu (good-fortune in Chinese). You’ll see him occasionally in the gallery… He’s the sweetest, most depending and gorgeous dog there is. We speak Dutch at home and I speak French at work. We have a fulfilling live with school, work and lots of other activities like gymnastics, judo, guitar, piano for Marc and the kids … and of course designing for me.
Do you have another job/career other than designing?
Yes, not really happy about it, I would love to be a SAHM again, but I have a job as an office manager in a window factory.
How many hours a day or week do you dedicate to designing, and how long does it usually take to complete a kit?
I try to be on my computer every night for at least 2,3 hours. I do occasionally fall asleep on my keyboard. Really, it happened! When I create a kit I usually don’t know where it will end so it can take a few days for a mini-kit or weeks for a kit or collection.
What are you favorite design tools and what computer/software/programs do you use?
I love the pen tool! and brushes! and textures! I use Photoshop CS5 and my wacom tablet. I won’t say never, but I rarely use CU items. I try to make my own elements by drawing or photographing them.
Do you have a method you like to follow when designing?
First I determine the color palette. Until not so long ago I started with the background papers but for the last few kits I first created a few drawings and then some word art. It keeps my focus on the theme. I also have my preview open at all times and add the elements as I create them. This way I can see the kit unfold before me. I like it this way.
Tell us about your featured kit, where did you find inspiration for it?
Well my girls just love quotes right now and they are really into the “we heart it” site. They like to take pics of these quotes and by some mystery I still have to resolve, these pics end up in my photo stream on my computer. It’s an amazing source of inspiration! Some of these quotes were about exploring life, finding yourself, making your choices, becoming you… That’s how my kit “ Create yourself” was born.
What can we expect to see on your store on the next weeks? Are you already working on some new releases?
I will be releasing my kit “Smile, it’s your day” and will be working on some Lovely Colors kits for July and August.
Tell us about your featured designer’s month, sales, promotions, gifts…
My entire store will be ON SALE for 40% OFF and you will have to watch out for some freebies too.
